Durham Highway would like to remind our district residents with the possibility of winter weather across portions of our state over the next few days, let's take a moment to review some tips for winter storm preparedness and safety: 1. Carbon monoxide kills! Never operate generators, camp stoves, or other alternative heating sources inside your home. 2. Check your emergency kit. Don't forget to have supplies in your car in case you're stranded in inclement weather. Also, keeping your fuel tank full will protect your car's fuel line from freezing AND keep you warm if you're caught in weather-snarled traffic. 3. Bring pets inside if possible; otherwise, try to move them to warm, sheltered areas and make sure they have access to food and non-frozen drinking water. 4. 911 is for emergencies! Please don't call 911 for power outages or road conditions. Contact your power company (store the number before the power goes out!) for outages, and call 511 for traffic updates from NC DOT. 5. Monitor local media and National Weather Service broadcasts for conditions, advisories, watches, or warnings in your area.
