Christmas Eve Luminaries The weather for luminaries is a little iffy for Christmas eve but we will try our best to have a beautiful display! WRAL now forecasts a 30% chance of rain but breezy. Please make sure you put enough sand in your bags to hold them up. Merry Christmas! LUMINARY INSTRUCTIONS Step 1. Open paper bag and if you fold down the opening into a 1" collar the bag is stronger. Step 2. Scoop sand into each bag so there is 2 to 3 inches in the bottom. It is important to use sand (as opposed to stones or dirt) as it will not only help keep bag upright but it will also extinguish the flame if the candle burns down or gets knocked over. Step 3. Twist candle in the middle of the sand at the bottom of the bag. This will set the candle into the sand and will trap the wax as it melts, allowing it to burn longer. Step 4. Candles will burn approximately 8 hours and should be lit at sunset on December 24th and allow to burn until they go out. A long stick lighter works best to light the candles. Step 5. Place bags spaced along property near street.
