Springdale Garden Club A big thank you to Van & Irene Cotter for hosting the garden club for March. Van, an expert in plant diseases, gave an amazing presentation on his volunteer work with the USAID Organization which provides economic, development and humanitarian assistance around the world for the US government. He spent time in Egypt, helping diagnose disease problems with green beans to increase food production and went to Nepal & Guatemala to help small villages with startup mushroom production. It was very interesting to hear how problems around the world are also ones that we have to deal with in our own gardens. At our April 5th meeting, Sara Knies who works for the North Carolina Division of Water Resources (DENR) in the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality will be giving a presentation on riparian zones (the area between land and water) and good stewardship of them. The topic is highly relevant to our neighborhood given our lakes and streams and recent concerns on the impact of erosion from development activities on these. Please plan on joining us for our next garden club meeting April 5th. More details to follow!
